the gift

I watched him pick up a leaf. It took some effort because the end of the stem was nestled under blades of grass, but he was patient. For about two minutes, he twisted and turned his treasure until he triumphantly lifted it up. He then walked, holding onto it, about thirty steps west. As he laid his gift down in front of her, I became speechless. Tears ran down my face without warning. My heart was beating so loudly I had to take a deep breath.
